Organizational Schema (3 of 3)
- Clause 8 of this International Standard defines a General organizational schema based on natural and/or scientific principles.
- The purpose of this organizational schema is to aid users of this International Standard in identifying groups of codes that may be related.
- Other organizational schema may be defined by registration.
- The rules for assigning numeric indices to EGC have not yet been finalized, however they are assigned consecutively as positive integers not equal to zero.
The optimal number of Groups is influenced by the aggregate number of ECC and EAC (currently about 2200). A tentative rule-of-thumb is “enough EGCs to result in about 25-50 codes-per-Group” – basically “about a page worth”. Too many, or too few, codes-per-Group reduces the utility of the organizational schema for efficient search by users.
