G.2 Overview

This International Standard will evolve through the publication of corrigenda and amendments, as well as republication of this International Standard itself. In a similar manner, EDCS Dictionary Entries registered for use with this International Standard in the International Register of Graphical Items will need to evolve. Of particular concern is when an entry needs to be changed or declared obsolete.  Declaring an entry obsolete is called deprecation. This annex defines a process for change and deprecation of both standardized and registered EDCS Dictionary Entries to ensure the long term coherence and orderly evolution of this International Standard. It also defines how a deprecated EDCS Dictionary Entry may be reinstated.

G.3 Change

To insure stable evolution while protecting the investment of users, care must be taken when changes are made to EDCS Dictionary Entries, whether they were originally defined in this International Standard or later by registration. The following rules apply both to changes to this International Standard by Amendment or republication and changes to registered EDCS Dictionary Entries:

  1. Changes of the magnitude allowed in corrigenda may be made to EDCS Dictionary Entries defined in this International Standard.

  2. No change of such a magnitude that would require amendment or republication of this International Standard shall be made to any EDCS Dictionary Entry defined in this International Standard. Instead, the existing EDCS Dictionary Entry shall be deprecated following the procedure defined in G.4.2 Deprecation of standardized EDCS Dictionary Entries and a new (replacement) EDCS Dictionary Entry shall be defined by amendment or republication.

  3. As required by ISO 9973:1994, no changes of any type shall be made to any EDCS Dictionary Entry defined by registration. Instead, the existing registered EDCS Dictionary Entry shall be deprecated following the procedure defined in G.4.3 Deprecation of registered EDCS Dictionary Entries and a new (replacement) registered EDCS Dictionary Entry shall be defined.

  4. Neither EDCS codes nor EDCS labels shall be redefined (by making a change to the associated EDCS Dictionary Entry of such a magnitude that it would require amendment or republication) or reused (by assigning them to a new or different EDCS Dictionary Entry) except by the process of reinstatement defined in G.5 Reinstatement.

G.4 Deprecation

G.4.1 Introduction

Deprecation provides an orderly process whereby both this International Standard and the International Register of Graphical Items may retain obsolete EDCS Dictionary Entries and indicate to users that these deprecated EDCS Dictionary Entries should not be used in new applications. Distinctly different procedures are used to change International Standards from those used to change the International Register of Graphical Items. Because of this, two different deprecation procedures are defined.

The committee responsible for the development of this International Standard shall publish and maintain a standing document containing lists of all deprecated EDCS Dictionary Entries, the reason for each deprecation, identification of the document(s) that implemented the deprecation (amendments, republications or registration proposals) and a link to the current online version of the deprecated entry. This document shall be made available on the World Wide Web and shall be referenced (that is, linked to) by both the International Register of Graphical Items and future amended or republished editions of this International Standard.

G.4.2 Deprecation of standardized EDCS Dictionary Entries

The following rules apply to deprecation of standardized EDCS Dictionary Entries:

  1. A deprecated EDCS Dictionary Entry shall be moved by amendment or republication to an annex of similar deprecated entries within this International Standard.  This International Standard contains Annex B for this purpose.

  2. The row(s) in the tables that previously defined the standardized EDCS Dictionary Entry shall be removed by amendment or republication. There shall be no indication in the table itself that the entry that once occupied that row is now deprecated. Note that by G.3(d), removed codes shall not be re-used except by reinstatement.

  3. Once an EDCS Dictionary Entry has been published in Annex B of this International Standard for a period of at least five years, it may be deleted from that annex (and therefore this International Standard) by amendment or republication.

G.4.3 Deprecation of registered EDCS Dictionary Entries

The following rules apply to deprecation of registered EDCS Dictionary Entries:

  1. ISO 9973:1994 states that registered items cannot be modified or moved, only deleted. Because of this, a deprecated registered EDCS Dictionary Entry shall be deleted from the International Register of Graphical Items following the procedures defined in ISO 9973:1994.

  2. The deprecated (formerly registered) EDCS Dictionary Entry shall be added to an annex of similar deprecated entries within this International Standard by amendment or republication.  This International Standard contains Annex B for this purpose.

  3. The Registrar of Graphical Items shall replace the deprecated EDCS Dictionary Entry in the International Register of Graphical Items with a note stating that this item has been deprecated, removed from the International Register of Graphical Items, and is now defined in Annex B of this International Standard. The Registrar of Graphical Items shall also provide a hyperlink to an online version of the current definition of each deleted EDCS Dictionary Entry (whether in this International Standard or the latest version of an amendment or republication in process).

G.5 Reinstatement

G.5.1 Introduction

Reinstatement provides an orderly process whereby this International Standard and the International Register of Graphical Items may promote previously deprecated EDCS Dictionary Entries back to standardized or registered status. Distinctly different procedures are used to change International Standards from those used to change the International Register of Graphical Items. Because of this, two different reinstatement procedures are defined.

G.5.2 Reinstatement of standardized EDCS Dictionary Entries

A deprecated EDCS Dictionary Entry may be reinstated by moving it from Annex B back into the main tables defining such entries in clauses 5 through 9 and annexes C through F of this International Standard.  The process of amendment or republication of this International Standard shall be used to accomplish this move.

G.5.3 Reinstatement of registered EDCS Dictionary Entries

Following the procedure defined in G.4.3 Deprecation of registered EDCS Dictionary Entries, deprecated registered EDCS Dictionary Entries are deleted from the International Register of Graphical Items and moved to Annex B of this International Standard. Therefore, a formerly registered EDCS Dictionary Entry can be reinstated by following the procedures of G.5.2 Reinstatement of standardized EDCS Dictionary Entries.
