APPENDIX B - Constraints
Feature Edge Constraints

Definition

The following restrictions apply to <Feature Edge> instances:

  1. The <Location> instances within a <Feature Edge> instance shall be distinct; that is, no two <Location> instances may have the same position in space.

  2. At feature topology level 2 or higher, no <Feature Edge> instance may intersect with or overlap another <Feature Edge> instance, except that they may share a common <Feature Node> instance.

  3. At feature topology level 3, each <Feature Edge> instance forms part of the boundaries of exactly two <Feature Face> instances.

  4. At feature topology level 4, at least one <Feature Edge> instance forms part of the boundary of more than two <Feature Face> instances.

  5. At feature topology level 5, if a <Feature Edge> instance E is located within a <Feature Volume> instance V, E shall associate to V.

The following restrictions apply to <Geometry Edge> instances:

  1. The <Geometry Node> instances of a <Geometry Edge> instance shall not have the same position in space.

  2. At geometry topology level 2 or higher, no <Geometry Edge> instance may intersect with or overlap another <Geometry Edge> instance, except that they may share a common <Geometry Node> instance.

  3. At geometry topology level 3, each <Geometry Edge> instance forms part of the boundaries of exactly two <Geometry Face> instances.

  4. At geometry topology level 4, at least one <Geometry Edge> instance forms part of the boundary of more than two <Geometry Face> instances.

  5. At geometry topology level 5, if a <Geometry Edge> instance E is located within a <Geometry Volume> instance V, E shall associate to V.

Rationale

The path defined by the sequence of line segments which connect the consecutive <Location> instances that make up a <Feature Edge> instance shall not intersect or overlap itself.
